Ten years have passed since the famous match between Lee Sedol and AlphaGo established AI’s dominance in the world of Go. In 2026, another official human-versus-AI match was held, this time between the world’s strongest professional player, Shin Jinseo, and KataGo. The match was intended to show that, with the help of AI, humans can learn to play better too.
Since the AlphaGo era, AI has grown even stronger, but human players have also learned an enormous amount. Shin Jinseo was the perfect player for such a match — AI has had a major influence on his approach to the game. Still, a handicap was necessary. Since humans can no longer compete with top AI on even terms, Shin Jinseo received a two-stone handicap, along with a time advantage designed to give both sides a roughly equal chance.
Let’s review the match together and find out whether humans are slowly closing the gap with top-level AI.
