good course, i would also say that genran were a little out of my level but some of them were nice puzzles, i learned some history also, i would only ad some more regular quizzes to keep your skills sharp
Good change of pace from rigorous lessons to learning by example from a masterful game and a bit of notable history. A bit out of reach for the lower levels of the recommendations. Final quiz a bit too tricky for the lower level too. Maybe I'm just reaching the limits of my abilities.
Great mix of content in this course! The Genran problems, though… definitely a bit beyond my current powers 😉
Such a fantastic change of pace. History, mystery, intrigue, conniving, ghostly revelations! And lots of .sgfs included for ongoing study—these files are really priceless. Lots of work went into this course and it shows. Enjoyable and informative.
the puzzles were too hard for me, but good to learn some history!
An astonishing travel from Go to GoT: a story of conspiracy, treason and blood to conquer the Throne
really wish there are more and more courses like this
I like everything but the final quiz! I present the answer in this order for the final question, but when I check the "View Questions", it always displays a different order!
Such a nail biter! Vadim and the Go Magic team tell a dramatic story, captivating the audience over the board. It was beautiful and instructive to see such iconic games paired with the historic recount of Jowa’s life. If you enjoy studying pro games this course is perfect. It may not have as many go problems in the quizzes, but you’re sure to pick up a lot. Just sit back and enjoy.
There are a few educational bits in here, like Jowa's philosophy to playing Go, but this is mostly a historical telling of the stories of Jowa, Gennan Inseki and Akaboshi Intetsu and the politics behind Japanese Go in the early 19th century. This is a fascinating and interesting course if you are interested in the historical aspect of Go
Great presentation and games.
A great series of analyses of some of Jowa’s games with excellent commentary and historical context. I loved this course
A very interesting view on the historical and political factors behind professional Go in ancient Japan.
So cool
A great story, simply and interestingly realized. And in combination with a great learning effect. Simply terrific
Very nice. Love the game reviews and history
very interesting course 🙂
One of the most inspiring and fascinating journeys ever. It cover both historical aspects (Inoue Genan Inseki by John Fairbairn also covers this) but also the in depth story of the game and it's technical aspect (covered in multiple places including Jowa’s Three Brilliances: Honinbo Jowa Plays Akaboshi Intetsu by John Fairbairn; out of print). No other resource brings everthing to live like this.
The course itself is fascinating. I loved the story and the different implementation of quizzes. Like other reviews I’d love to see the games in completion and further exploration of the problem. Love the history and would love to see more courses like this
The course could have been better if it focused on the games and less on storytelling, which I can learn from ChatGPT. I was hoping to learn how these players think, how they read positions, and what ideas guided their decisions, rather than simply showing moves or saying “atari, hane, connect” without enough explanation. I hope courses focus on the ideas and thought process behind the moves.
