Nihon Ki-in
Importance: ★☆☆
Japanese Go Association
The Nihon Ki-in is the central governing body for professional and amateur Go in Japan. It oversees the ranking system, organizes major tournaments, and promotes the game’s development both domestically and internationally. As Japan’s primary Go institution, it plays a pivotal role in maintaining the tradition of the game while also fostering innovation and global outreach.

The Nihon Ki-in was established in July 1924 as a unifying organization for Japanese Go. It was founded in response to the Great Kanto Earthquake, which had caused financial hardship for the existing Go factions, including Hoensha, Chuo Ki-in, and Hiseikai. The formation was largely driven by Baron Okura Kishichiro, a prominent patron of Go, who invested ¥100,000 into the institution and provided financial support until 1937.

The first president of the Nihon Ki-in was Makino Nobuaki, with Okura Kishichiro serving as vice president. Most professional players at the time joined the new organization, except for the Inoue faction in Osaka and a few independent players. While smaller rival organizations emerged over the years, the Nihon Ki-in remained Japan’s dominant Go institution.
During World War II, the Nihon Ki-in’s original building was destroyed during air raids. After the war, the organization played a crucial role in reviving professional Go, formalizing rankings, and promoting the game internationally.
