Watari refers to a technique that creates a “bridge” between two groups of stones near the edge of the board. This maneuver usually occurs on the first or second line, occasionally on the third, and is vital for maintaining connectivity and reducing weaknesses.
O uso mais comum do watari aparece no final da partida (yose), quando se quer ligar grupos separados para reforçar a posição e impedir a invasão do adversário. Um watari bem-sucedido anula as ameaças de corte ou reduz a eficácia das pedras que o cercam.
