Degiri
Push and cut
Degiri is a short but powerful two-move sequence in Go, combining a push (de) and a cut (kiri). The push extends outward, reducing the opponent’s liberties, while the cut severs their stones, creating a division. This tactic is all about disrupting your opponent’s position, forcing them into a fight, and exploiting weaknesses in their shape.
Why Use Degiri?
Degiri is a bold and strategic move that can dramatically shift the balance of the game. It’s particularly effective when:
- The opponent’s stones are thin or unconnected, making them vulnerable to cuts.
- You have strong surrounding positions to support the fight.
- You’re aiming to create immediate tactical battles and disrupt your opponent’s plans.
While degiri can be highly rewarding, it requires precise timing and a good understanding of shape dynamics. Cutting too early or without proper support can lead to inefficiencies, but with careful planning, it’s a powerful tool to seize the initiative.
