Go bowls/Go containers

Goke are specially designed bowls used to store Go stones when not in play. In addition to storing stones, goke play a role in the etiquette of the game. Captured stones are often placed in the lid of your goke, keeping them organized and visible throughout the match.

A pair of beautifully polished wooden Go bowls (Goke) with lids, used for storing black and white stones.

Typically, a standard set includes two goke—one for black stones and one for white stones.

Bowls are traditionally crafted from wood, bamboo, or lacquered materials, each offering a unique aesthetic and feel. The most common wooden goke are made from Katsura, Keyaki (Zelkova), or Kaya wood, prized for their durability and natural beauty. High-end goke may feature intricate Japanese lacquerwork (urushi), transforming them into works of art. For more affordable options, bamboo or plastic goke are widely used, especially in clubs and casual play settings.

Some goke, particularly handcrafted or lacquered versions, are highly valued as collector’s items. These pieces are celebrated not only for their functionality but also for their artistry and connection to Go’s rich cultural heritage.
