Hasami tsuke is a tesuji that applies pressure on an opponent’s stone by “sandwiching” it between two friendly stones.

Hasami tsuke can appear anywhere on the board but is especially effective along the edges, where space is limited. A well-executed hasami tsuke can force the opponent into an awkward or inefficient shape, while also creating miai (mutually exclusive but equally valuable options) for the player. This makes it a versatile and powerful attacking tool.

In the endgame, a typical second-line hasami tsuke often creates a situation where two key points (often referred to as “a and b”) become miai, ensuring the player can efficiently secure territory.
