Kido

The Way of Go

The term Kido (棋道) combines ki (棋), meaning “Go,” and (道), meaning “way” or “path,” reflecting the idea of Go as a lifelong pursuit of mastery, strategy, and personal development. This aligns with other classical Japanese traditions, such as kendō (剣道, the way of the sword) and shodō (書道, the way of calligraphy).

Kido Magazine and Its Role in Go

Beyond its philosophical meaning, Kido was also the name of a respected Go magazine published by Nihon Ki-in for 75 years. It provided professional game reviews, interviews, and educational content, becoming a crucial resource for serious Go players.

Kido magazine was one of the most authoritative Go publications of its time. It was succeeded by Monthly Go World after it ceased publication in 1999.

In September 2023, the Nihon Ki-in launched Kido Web (棋道Web), a subscription-based digital magazine offering professional Go content. Some materials are available for free, continuing the tradition of Go journalism in a modern format.
