Meaning of Moku in Scoring

In the context of scoring, moku () represents an individual point of territory.

A different kanji () is used when moku refers to handicap stones. In handicap games, moku denotes the number of stones given to the weaker player.

The term moku also appears in names of specific board positions:

  • Komoku (小目) – The 3-4 point in the corner, balancing influence and territory.
  • Takamoku (高目) – The 5-4 point, emphasizing outward influence.
  • Mokuhazushi (目外し) – The 5-3 point, a less common corner opening.
