Avalanche joseki

Nadare is a joseki that develops from a 3-4 point corner opening, followed by a high approach and an inside contact play. The sequence is named after an avalanche due to the pattern of cascading moves that can unfold across a large portion of the board. Some players also note that White’s stones visually resemble snow tumbling down a mountain slope.

Historically, the nadare joseki was thought to lead to balanced outcomes for both sides. However, with the rise of AI analysis, particularly since 2018, it has been revealed that some lines, especially in the large avalanche, can be slightly unfavorable for White.

Both players have options to steer the joseki toward calmer outcomes if they wish to avoid complications.
