Niken Tobi

Japanese: Niken tobi 二間トビKorean: Dukan ttwim 두칸 뜀Chinese: Èr jiān tiào 二间跳 (二間跳)

Two-space jump / Two-point jump

The niken tobi, or two-space jump, is a basic shape in Go used to develop quickly into the center or along the side (in the latter case it is usually called a niken biraki). It consists of two stones separated by two points horizontally or vertically.

In open positions or when supported by other stones, niken tobi allows a player to build influence or expand territory efficiently. It is frequently seen in the opening and midgame as part of frameworks or extensions.

Despite its vulnerabilities, the shape’s lightness often discourages a direct attack, and with proper reading, players can respond flexibly to cutting attempts. In tighter or more tactical positions, players may prefer stronger alternatives like the large knight’s move for added stability.
