Double atari

Ryou-atari is a basic technique in Go where a single move places two of the opponent’s groups into atari simultaneously. Because the opponent can only respond to one of the threats at a time, the other group is typically captured, leading to a significant shift in the game’s balance.

This tactic is often introduced early in a player’s study of Go due to its simplicity. It serves as a vivid example of how Go rewards moves that create multiple threats. Recognizing opportunities for double atari—as well as spotting potential vulnerabilities in one’s own shapes—is a fundamental part of good tactical awareness.

Strong players are always alert to the potential of a double atari, both to exploit and to avoid it.
