Open skirt

Susoaki refers to an open edge or “skirt” along one or both sides of a territorial framework, especially near the second or third line. These openings often invite slide-ins or jumping invasions from the opponent.

While the framework may appear solid, an open skirt can make it easy for the opponent to reduce the territory or even undermine life potential.

This concept is especially relevant in mid-game, where reducing the opponent’s territorial potential becomes a priority. Weaker players may underestimate how damaging an open skirt can be, as defending it usually requires a gote move.
