Large Slant or Taisha Joseki

Taisha, meaning “large slant” in Japanese, refers to a particularly elaborate and intricate joseki that usually arises from a 5-3 or 3-4 move.

Known for its complexity and reading depth, the pattern was once considered one of the ultimate tests of joseki knowledge. Often referred to as the joseki of hundreds of variations in Japanese and as the joseki of thousands of variations in Chinese, it exemplifies an extraordinary level of intricacy. Many variations can quickly become full-board fights, often leading to unresolved positions even among professionals.

Despite its historical prominence, taisha has become less common in the AI era, as modern analysis frequently finds more efficient alternatives. Still, it remains a respected study tool and a fascinating glimpse into the strategic richness of Go.
