High point

Takamoku refers to the 5-4 point on the Go board—one of the five standard opening points and the farthest from the corner. It is a high-position move, prioritizing central influence over early corner security.

By choosing takamoku, a player signals an intention to build large-scale frameworks (moyo) and dominate the center, rather than securing quick territory. It contrasts with more corner-focused points like the 3-4 or 3-3.

The typical response to a takamoku is a kakari at the 3-4 point underneath, which often leads to solid territory but cedes central influence. Alternatively, players might directly invade with a 3-3 point move, challenging Black’s ability to balance influence and stability.

This makes takamoku a versatile but demanding position, favoring players confident in handling influence-based strategies.
