Connection

Connection (Tsugi) refers to a move that connects one stone or group to another, typically to prevent separation or capture by the opponent. Connections are vital to preserving the integrity of one’s shape and territory. There are three primary types of connections:

  • Solid Connection: Two or more stones that are directly joined, forming a single chain that can only be captured together.
  • Tactical Connection: Stones that are not in the same chain but cannot be effectively separated by the opponent due to threats or shape, such as in the bamboo joint or kosumi.
  • Strategic Connection: Groups that may be physically separate but are positioned in a way that they support each other, often evaluated in terms of potential to connect during future fights.

Proper tsugi plays not only defend groups from being cut but can also be used offensively to pressure weak points or isolate enemy stones.
