Overplay

Uchisugi refers to a play that pushes too far — a move made with excessive ambition that ultimately becomes a liability.

Typically, overplay is a result of greed or an attempt to gain too much from a local situation without adequate support.

An overplay move may initially look bold or brilliant, but if the opponent responds well, it often results in a local collapse or a broader strategic disadvantage. Recognizing overplay is critical for developing judgment, especially in middle-game fighting and invasions.

Such moves can sometimes succeed against a weaker or unprepared opponent but are risky and unreliable in serious play. Players who consistently overplay tend to lose stability in their positions and offer the opponent strong counterattack opportunities.
