Splitting move

Wariuchi refers to a move played on the side of the board, typically between two widely spaced opponent stones. This strategic placement disrupts the opponent’s potential development along the side, while maintaining flexibility to extend toward either side depending on the response.

The purpose of a wariuchi is to split the opponent’s stones, prevent their connection, and reduce the influence of frameworks. This move can limit both territorial and strategic ambitions and is especially effective when used with good positional judgment.

In modern Go, wariuchi is seen less often as an early-game strategy due to the influence of AI, which tends to prioritize more direct plays or approaches. However, it remains a valid and occasionally powerful move in the right context, especially in human games where positional judgment and direction of play are crucial.
