Watari

Japanese: Watari 渡りKorean: Geonneogam 건너감Chinese: Dù 渡

Bridge, underneath connection

Watari refers to a technique  that creates a “bridge” between two groups of stones near the edge of the board. This maneuver usually occurs on the first or second line, occasionally on the third, and is vital for maintaining connectivity and reducing weaknesses.

The most common application of watari appears in the endgame when players seek to link separated groups to strengthen their position and prevent an opponent’s invasion. A successful watari can nullify threats of cutting or reduce the effectiveness of surrounding stones.
