Office of Go

The Godokoro was a prestigious official position in the Tokugawa shogunate, created to oversee and regulate the world of professional Go. This role was reserved exclusively for Meijin, the highest-ranked Go player of the time, and came with significant responsibilities. The Godokoro was not just a title—it was a central authority that shaped the structure and development of Go during the Edo period.

The Role and Historical Significance of the Godokoro

As the head of the Go world, the Godokoro had a wide range of duties. They authorized dan promotions, recognized the strongest players, and settled disputes among the major Go houses to ensure fair play. They also approved high-stakes challenge matches, including those between rival Go houses, and managed the distribution of government stipends to support the leading Go schools.

The first Godokoro was Honinbo Sansa (Nikkai), appointed directly by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Under this system, the Four Go Houses—Honinbo, Inoue, Yasui, and Hayashi—flourished, and Go evolved into a highly structured, government-backed discipline. The Godokoro played a key role in elevating Go from a pastime to a respected art form and profession.

Decline and Legacy

The Godokoro system came to an end with the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1868, during the Meiji Restoration. However, the professional Go system persisted through independent organizations, eventually leading to the establishment of institutions like the Nihon Ki-in.

Though the Godokoro no longer exists, its influence is still felt today in the structured ranking systems and competitive traditions of modern professional Go. It remains a fascinating chapter in the history of the game, highlighting the deep cultural and institutional roots of Go in Japan.
