Ko threat

Ko threat (koudate) refers to a move made during a ko fight that forces the opponent to respond, thereby allowing the player to retake the ko. This tactical tool is crucial in sustaining pressure and can shape the overall flow of the game. An effective ko threat must be significant enough that ignoring it would result in a substantial loss, yet expendable enough that the player does not mind losing the local position if the threat is answered.

The availability and quality of ko threats often determine the feasibility of engaging in a ko fight. Experienced players will assess not only the immediate ko but also count the number and strength of their potential threats around the board. Ko threats can include attacking weak groups, threatening to capture stones, or initiating invasions that demand urgent defense.

If you want to take your ko skills to the next level, our Ko Fight Course covers everything from fundamental principles to advanced techniques.
