Ki is the character used in Japanese for Go and other board games, and it appears in many compound words associated with the game. Unlike Igo (囲碁), which denotes Go specifically, Ki (棋) has a broader meaning — the same character is used in Shogi (将棋) — and is found in words such as Kishi (棋士, professional Go player) and Kiin (棋院, Go institute).
